INTRODUCTION
Buntings Wood is an area of former agricultural land which was purchased by Thorne-Moorends Town Council ill 1993 to create a Community Woodland.
The ambitious project extending to over 80 acres is now beginning to take shape. Much of the area has now been planted and some of the trees from the earliest planting are now over 15ft. tall.
The Town Council, with the help of the DMBC Woodland Department and grant assistance from the Forestry Commission, have endeavoured to enhance the local recreational environment for residents and visitors alike.
HOW TO GET THERE
Buntings Wood can be reached by crossing the Canal at Thorne Lock and proceeding down the right hand lane, past a pair of collages on the left hand side. A small car park is located at this point. There is a network of paths that can be followed in conjunction with the map on the leaflet; which can be obtained from the council office.
WHAT TO SEE
The large field on the right of the lane is the most recently planted (winter 2001/02) together with another just before the Railway embankment. The margins and hedges form a haven for wildlife, especially birds.
Beyond the railway underpass are the three planted areas which are established and growing well. There are tens of thousands of trees on this area which extends beyond the
motorway canal bridge.
The planting includes native trees such as Oak and Ash. The trees growing most prolifically (willow) are those that have been planted in the former "Old Don" river bed which is lower than the rest of the site and therefore retains more moisture.
Over the next few years, a wildflower meadow will be planted, and Sammy Ray's pond will be restored.
FRIENDS OF BUNTINGS WOOD
An organisation called Friends of Buntings Wood has been set-up to look after and promote the Community Woodland. If you are interested in joining or require any information, then please contact:
Marie Sprakes,
18 Vaughan Avenue,
DONCASTER, DNJ 2QE.
ADOPT AN AREA
Because of the size of the wood and the number of trees planted, machinery is used to suppress weed growth. As shown on the leaflets map there is an area known as 'Adopt-an area' which is managed by the Friends.
Individuals can plant and nurture their own trees in this area, safe in the knowledge that weed management takes place by hand. To help your tree grow, why not get a tree tube - available from Thorne-Moorends Town Council. The Friends are more than willing to offer assistance and/or advice. Please contact: -
Craig Nicholls (01405) 813329.
