Thorne-Moorends Town Council - Pictorial History
The Princess Royal Footbridge.

On the morning of Wednesday 12th October 2005
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal
came to Thorne to open the new canal footbridge.

The new pedestrian footbridge over the canal is located on Hatfield Road, close to the site of the old swing bridge, which was demolished in the 1960´s following construction of the adjacent flyover. However, the narrow steep footways and carriageways have been a constant source of frustration and possible danger for pedestrians, cyclists, pushchairs etc. ever since.

The new footbridge allows all pedestrians, cyclists etc. easy access to and from Thorne and local recreational facilities. As well as forming a healthy walking/cycling route it is environmentally friendly by reducing short car journeys and is proving very popular with residents.

In order for the route to be as level as possible the bridge swings to allow the many leisure boats using the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Canal to pass through.
