 Thorne Colliery - Gone but never forgotten
Thorne colliery was established in the early 1930's. In 1956 production was halted
(due to water ingress in No. 2 Shaft) and the workforce transferred to neighbouring collieries.

The Hedgerow Centre
 
The Empire Cinema was gutted in an early morning blaze on February 27th 1952 and later became a Church Hall This was demolished along with the Miners Welfare to make way for the Surestart Building. The pictures above show the site of the Welfare Club and Cinema. Sure Start is a Government programme which aims to achieve better outcomes for children, parents and communities.
 
 
Pictures above show the 'old senior girls' school, it being demolished and the new houses built on the site.

The land at the side of 'The Winning Post Lane' now has houses built on it.
Moorends library has now moved to the new 'Sure Start' building. Adjoining the 'old' building library is the Bungalow Project offices. The Winning Post is now a Community Centre
