Doncaster Gazette 6.7.1917 (Roll of Honour) stated 'Joseph Butler A.B. who lost his life in an accident on hospital ship HMS China 3rd July 1916 aged 41'.
Born Thorne, brother of Albert, working in Hull as dock labourer when he enlisted. Joseph was buried at Western Cemetery, Hull

Butler Thomas Ernest |
Tom, another brother of Albert, served in 'Ambulance Corps' attached to York & Lancaster Regiment 6th Battalion (Corporal 10957). He was invalided out of the army (11.3.1918) with 'blindness in one eye aggravated by active service' and died from pneumonia 22nd July 1918 at Glasshoughton. Tom was a miner at Glasshoughton Colliery before signing up. He was buried in Thorne Churchyard.
The CWGC has accepted that Tom's death was a result of his active service. He was placed in the United Kingdom Book of Remembrance in early November 2011. « Press Release »
