THORNE MOORENDS TOWN COUNCIL

Remedial works to the Motte

Peel Hill Motte Thorne Town Council in discussion with English Heritage has drawn up a plan for remedial works to the Motte, which is located in a prominent position near the centre of Thorne. A Motte and Bailey was a type of early castle, which was introduced by the Normans after 1066 and is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry. This scheduled ancient monument has been suffering from erosion for many years - the repair of which was a major priority of the project together with a number of other improvements as follows:

  • Infill of eroded sections.

  • Provision of steps to enable the public to access the top of the monument safely.

  • Remedial works to the boundaries such as removal of leylandi and to be replaced by hawthorn hedging and a brick wall.

  • Removal of shrubs and redundant hard furnishings.

  • Provision of on site interpretation material.

Scheduled Monument Consent was applied for in November 2005 and the boundary improvement works were carried out in 2006. The current phase of the work is the repair of eroded sections, provision of steps and construction of a path around the base funded largely by English Heritage with a £12000 grant.
The Contractor, Bernhard's Landscapes (Wakefield) Ltd. started on site on Monday 14th May, the foreman is Paul Jepson and machine operator Michael Rock. The Council is considering putting in preventative measures to stop biking and sliding down the Motte which is causing so much damage.
