Humberhead Peatlands National Nature Reserve
(Thorne and Hatfield Moors)

The Humberhead Peatlands National Nature Reserve comprising Thorne and Hatfield Moors is the largest area of Lowland Raised Bog in Britain, occupying almost 3500 hectares of land east and south-east of Thorne in South Yorkshire.

The majority of the area, which is managed by Natural England, has been worked for peat in the past and is now open access land under the terms of the “CROW” act.

By Air: Doncaster Sheffield airport is only miles south of Hatfield Moors and miles south of Thorne Moore and there is a scheduled bus service 230 running from the airport to Boston Park (for Hatfield Moors) and Marshland Road, Moorends (for Thorne Moors).

  By Rail: Nearest train stations are: Doncaster, Thorne North, Thorne South, Crowle.
  By Bus: From Doncaster to:

Thorne Moors  87, 88, 88A
Hatfield Moors 88a only

 By Road: The M180 runs eastwards from the M18 Junction 5, with Thorne Moors to the north and Hatfield Moors to the south. For Thorne Moors The A614 Thorne to Bawtry road runs along the eastern side of Hatfield Moor right past the Boston Park access point. 

By canal: The Stainforth and Keadby canal runs along the southern side of Thorne Moors, the nearest theoretical access being at New Zealand, but this is currently problematical without the landowners permission. Access by boat is best achieved by mooring at Crowle where Thorne/Crowle   Moors are easily accessible to the north-east.

 For Thorne Moors:
  • Marshland Road, Moorends.
  • Wilkinson Avenue, Moorends.
  • Crowle - northwest of the Town Centre.
  For Hatfield Moors:
  • via Remple Lane, Hatfield Woodhouse to car park.
  • Off the A614 at Boston Park (car park).
  • North from Wroot village.
Activities:
  Walking. There are a number of waymarked walks on both Thorne and Hatfield Moors and in addition The Peatlands Way long distance footpath route passes through both sites.
  Horse riding Horse riding is allowed by arrangement with Natural England on part of Hatfield Moor on a permit basis.
  Cycling Cycle routes are being designated on Hatfield Moor - Contact Janet Canning.
  Birdwatching: There are three hides available for the public to use on Hatfield Moors
  Organised activities: The site staff organise a large number of guided walks throughout the year ranging from Nightjar and Nightingale Hunts to Fungi Forays.
  Volunteers: A skilled group of volunteers help Natural England to manage and maintain the Moors and assist visitors. Anyone wishing to be considered for training as a volunteer please contact the Community Support Officer Janet Canning on 01405 818804.
